We offer ultrasound for pregnancy confirmation. This is best done between day 28 and 35 of pregnancy. Where a result is negative, we can follow up with further scans and/or blood relaxin levels.
In house testing daily just off tyecm4 motorway, Kinnegad. Same day results within two hours. We can also facilitate evening and weekend sampling. Results are run immediately on our in-house immunoassay analyzer on the same day to confirm timing of ovulation. Also useful for timing c-section where dates might be in doubt.
Progesterone testing can be performed every 2-3 days starting about 3-5 days into the heat. Timing of the test can be more certain if the lengths of the dog’s previous heat cycles are known. During the early stages of the heat cycle, progesterone levels are typically less than 1.0 ng/ml until the day before the LH surge. The day of the LH surge, serum progesterone concentrations are 2-3 ng/ml; the day following the LH surge, the serum progesterone concentration is 3-4 ng/ml. We can estimate that, in most bitches, ovulation occurs approximately two days after the LH surge. Ovulation occurs at a progesterone level of 5 ng/ml. Once the egg is released, it takes two further days for maturation to occur.
These values allow us to time ovulation and guide the timing of mating to maximize success. If mating naturally, there’s a wide window for success. For AI matings, there’s a very narrow window and these require very close monitoring.
At Park Pets Kinnegad, we have experienced surgeon with an excellent track record – no puppies have been lost in this practice that had a heartbeat at birth. Our vet was a surgical teacher at the RVC London from 2000-2004. We use special techniques to revive puppies.
We have a sterile theater and cutting edge techniques with pulse oximetry, gaseous anaesthesia and infusion pumps for fluid therapy. We lectured on this subject at the UCD annual conference in 2018. We aim to have the bitch and puppies all discharged within 90 minutes.
